Summer of Colour Trail now open at Chichester Cathedral

Families looking for free and engaging activities this summer can now discover a kaleidoscope of colour at Chichester Cathedral, where the Summer of Colour trail has officially launched for the school holidays.

Running until 4 September, the free family trail invites visitors to look beyond the Cathedral's ancient stone walls and uncover colour, creativity and hidden details inspired by the iconic John Piper tapestry behind the High Altar, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Beginning beneath Piper's celebrated masterpiece, the self-led trail takes families on a colourful journey through six themed locations across the Cathedral. With no set route to follow, children can explore at their own pace, guided by the Cathedral's much-loved Wilfrid the Seal character, discovering colourful details they may never have noticed before.

Along the way, families have the opportunity to enjoy a range of hands-on creative activities, including contributing to a large collaborative weaving artwork, trying stained glass-inspired crafts and completing a specially commissioned colouring sheet inspired by the Cathedral's remarkable architecture and artwork.

After completing the trail, families can relax in the Cathedral's peaceful gardens and enjoy lunch, coffee or an ice cream at the Cloisters Kitchen & Garden Café.

For those who want to explore further, visitors can continue their summer adventure around the city with the Chichester Family Art Trail, organised by Chichester BID. The trail takes participants on a creative journey around the city centre, encouraging families to discover the city's many public artworks and artistic venues while exploring its independent shops, cafés and historic streets.

Chichester Cathedral is open Monday to Saturday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and Sunday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The trail is free, but donations are welcome.

The Summer of Colour Trail runs until 4 September 2026, making it the perfect addition to a family day out in Chichester this summer.
