Caron Buckingham-Rhyder - Between Root and Sky

Oxmarket Contemporary is delighted to welcome back Caron Buckingham-Rhyder, ten years after her first exhibition with us.

A self-confessed dendrophile, Caron has long been fascinated by trees and their enduring presence in the landscape. Through painting and sculpture, she explores the ways in which trees connect us to place, memory and time. Whether standing alone or forming part of a wider landscape, they become both subject and symbol, often carrying narratives of resilience, transformation and loss.

Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Caron builds her paintings through layers of colour, texture and expressive mark-making. Rooted in close observation, her creative process often begins with sketches, photographs or painting outdoors, before developing beyond direct representation. Memory, emotion and intuition combine with a rich range of visual references to create works that evoke a sense of presence rather than simply recording what is seen. Through her work, she invites viewers to pause, look more closely, and deepen their connection with the natural world.

Caron's background in architecture continues to influence her visual language. Elements of structure, rhythm and form run throughout her compositions, while drawing remains at the heart of her practice. Her ongoing exploration of materials, including wood, wire, plaster, clay and video, has further developed her interest in surface, abstraction and the tactile experience of making.
